Raku Workshop

img atelier_modelage

A day at Raku Workshop of Patrizia Garavina in the countryside of Bologna, Italy

Raku is a technique with ancient Japanese origins; it was created for the bowl of "tea ceremony".
It was a sacred and rich ceremonial. When the borders of Japan were opened, American ceramists adopted this technique in the West where it has been developing quickly, for the extraordinary and unique result it offers. During the first workshop you will be able to shape a piece, which will be cooked at Partizia’s workshop with the Raku technique. We will use enamel pieces, which have been made with a special clay and have been pre-cooked, putting them in a special gas oven in open air at a temperature up to 1000 ° C. You will take out the object still incandescent and put in the sawdust; the very fast reduction of oxygen will transform glazes and colors.
It's really a total surprise every time !
Then each of you will clean his work of combustion residues, ... and it is done !
The workshop will last all day. The morning for enameling, and preparation outside, the afternoon, the défournage and cleaning works.
